Bikini Laser Hair Removal FAQs

Laser hair removal works by targeting individual hair follicles with concentrated beams of light. Existing hairs fall out in the days following the treatment, and the damaged hair follicle stops producing new hair.

Laser hair removal is considered a virtually painless procedure. That being said, everyone’s pain tolerance is different, and because the skin along the bikini line is thin and sensitive, some women may experience more discomfort in that area than others. Most patients find the temporary discomfort to be well worth the long-term results.

In the six weeks before your bikini or Brazilian laser hair removal treatment, avoid waxing or plucking your hair to ensure the hair follicles remain intact. The laser targets the root of the hair, and if the root is gone, the treatment won’t be effective.

Shave the area completely a day or two before your treatment. This will prevent the laser from targeting and burning hair on the surface of the skin. In order to minimize irritation, do not shave the day of your treatment.

The hair growth cycle consists of three distinct phases. Laser hair removal only works during the active growth phase, also known as the anagen phase. Generally speaking, about 20% of hair is in the anagen phase at any point in time. Because a single laser hair removal session can only treat up to 20% of hair, multiple treatments are required.

Hair growth in the bikini line area is mostly triggered by hormones, which means the area typically requires more treatments. Most patients achieve optimal results after at least six but up to 12 treatments.
